Mount Vernon Trail: Belle Haven Marina

***Because this trail is so long, there will be several posts for different start points along the trail.

Enjoy the breeze off the water and take in the view while you stroll, walk, bike, or jog the Mount Vernon Trail. This 18 mile system of parks, trails, and scenic routes goes from Rosslyn to Mount Vernon. You can access the trail at a number of locations along its route, all with parking. There are also restroom facilities and (in season) water fountains at various points, as well as picnic areas, scenic overlooks, and historical markers.

Park at Belle Haven Marina for a great view of the river and a chance to watch boats. You’ll see people fishing, picnicking, and feeding the ducks. There is a large grassy area where the kids can run around like maniacs.

The trail is heavily used by pedestrians, dog walkers, cyclists, and families alike. Alert children to how to behave safely around cyclists before you go, and take advantage of some of the grassy areas to let them have some freedom, but keep them near you on the trail itself or as you approach the shore. If your kids are biking the trail, teach them how to pass slower traffic by calling “passing on your left.” You’ll find the cyclist traffic is overwhelmingly courteous here and observes this protocol.

Getting There: Use GPS Coordinates 38.777958,-77.049354 or get directions.
Trail surface: paved. Marked with a center line.
Freedom Coded: Red, due to high bike traffic on the trail and proximity of the river on the other side of the park. If your child can swim or be trusted to stay away from the river, you may feel comfortable giving more leeway.
Double stroller accessible: 100%
Stroller type: any. Be prepared to let cyclists pass.
Distance: up to 18 miles one way
Loop: no
Shade cover: Varies from full sun to shady, depending on what part of the trail you’re on, but sunny is the norm. Belle Haven Park and Marina would be in the “sunny” category.
Restrooms: At various locations along the trail. Check the website to locate them.
Parking: There is a large, off street lot.
